Glass engraving with a small drill is an intuitive technique; the drill is held to the glass in the same way you would hold a pencil to paper. During this intensive practical course, you will explore in detail the marks and textures that can be made on clear glass with small diamonds, stones and polishers. You will begin to build up a repertoire you can draw on to realise your own designs, and take back to your own artistic practice.

This technique can hold its own as a method of engraving on glass, but can also be used in combination with lathe engraving, sandblast and etching which makes it a very useful addition to your skill set.

Learn how to transfer your own drawings and images on to clear glass, and experiment with line, surface and intaglio styles. There will be practical demonstrations, and group discussions about the importance of good design, photography and display of finished work.

Artist Biography

Nancy Sutcliffe is an award winning contemporary glass engraver and gilder. At art school she specialised in Medical and Scientific Illustration and graduated with a BA.Hons in Design. The discipline and attention to detail required in that subject has informed much of her subsequent work. Drawing is key to her artistic practice and her engravings are essentially carved drawings on glass.

For several years Nancy shared her time between her studio in rural Herefordshire and city living in the Middle East. Whilst in the UAE she developed a fascination for gold leaf and how it might be applied to her figurative engravings. The result of her extensive experimentation is a richly detailed style of inscribed applied gold leaf which has become characteristic of her work.

Nancy exhibits internationally and has taught in Frauenau, Germany; Boda Glasbruk, Sweden; and at Corning Studio, USA. She has been a finalist in International glass prize exhibitions in Japan 2018 and Germany 2014 and in the Lithuanian Glass Biennale in 2014. She has participated in the British Glass Biennale 4 times. Nancy’s solo exhibitions have been in the UK and Germany, and she has work in private and public collections.  Alongside Katie Huskie, Nancy was selected as the Wimbledon AELTC Artist of the year 2018.
